i'm quite impressed at how well this works! Never thought of using the front facing camera to track the face and display an image accordingly....
Shame my 1st gen ipad doesn't have a ff camera.

Well, on a 256kbps stream (not sure if the music would get re-encoded or if the service would allow you to select bitrate) you would use about 112.5 MB per hour of streaming. If you had a 30 minute commute each way to work, you are looking at (roughly) going over your allowance in a month (AT&T USA) without any other data usage. (60 mins x 20 days = 2,250MB ).
I'm not sure this is sustainable unless the telecom providers stop putting small data caps on usage...
You get 2GB bandwidth allowance? Most tarrifs in the UK are capped at 500MB. :(

That sounds a little funny coming from a guy with a brand new high end mbp and iPad 2 in his sig...
Anyway, this is interesting. Seems like apple and google are almost not competing. The people who want an iPhone get an iPhone. The people who don't choose among the other options, and google is winning that battle by a lot.
It does make sense. He spent his money on an iPad 2 and a MBP. Its called prioritizing.

I'd love this on an iPhone, but we're probably a year or two away from it, if ever. Death of the GPS unit cant come soon enough.

What has me curious is why the area where the calendar names appear is blurred. Seeing the "flippy triangle" makes me think that iCal will support calendar groups. Some uses for groups that I can see are:
1 - Eliminate clutter by only showing the calendars in that group when it is selected.
2 - they can be used as a source of calendars. For instance, you might create a group called "Work" with the source being an exchange server so anyone's calendar that you have rights to see will appear under the group.
3 - Improve backups, syncing, or sharing.
This functionality exists in the current iCal

...Coupled with my wimax wifi router which has an 8 hour battery, I can work pretty much anywhere and be connected whenever I need....
What company wimax router do you use and what's the monthly fee?
I'm trying to decide on a 3G sim for my iPad or a wimax router for my laptops and iPod touch with in the next month so any info you could give would be appreciated.

What would that have to do with the group of people who buy Mac Pros? They're not business people. They're primarily photographers and video people.
"What the shareholders use" is possibly the most irrelevant point raised in this thread.
Also, as has been pointed out, the iMacs are not that overpriced; especially given the cost of 27" IPS displays.
That said, people have always assumed cinema displays to be more overpriced than they actually were, if only because they weren't making like-for-like comparisons. It's less true now that LCD prices have been adjusted downwards after the price-fixing scandal, but a Dell 27" IPS display is still pretty expensive.
I'm not saying that doesn't have high prices - they do - but very frequently, people are not making a like-for-like comparison. Most notably in screens. I don't know of any iPad competitors that use IPS displays, and make no mistake: IPS displays are more expensive than the competition. Most people also don't care about display technology, but it matters to people in the photo/video field.
All that matter is GROSS MARGINS on the financial reports. Apple's gross margins far exceed dell or hp's gross margins. HENCE, apple is making more profit for any piece of equipment they sell. The prices could be lower, but they are going to charge higher because they can charge higher, and people will still buy them. I wonder how many people here really can read a financial statement from a corporation. The answers are there, not in component costs. It is basic business to any MBA.

pretty similar to the rumors on page 2 (obtained by macrumors directly, but "unverified") except that those rumors also include displays and a core 2 duo in something other than the mac pro.
I'm going to split the difference and say
- leopard
- mac pro
- xserve
- displays
Same as I've been saying for a while now! :p
I think I'm most excited about leopard as I won't be in the market for any hardware for a while now.

Many professional cameras use magnesium alloys for their chassis, makes for a very light but amazingly strong frame that will not burn any more than aluminum :)

Well I'm a pro user and i welcome the new FCP and it's price.
I have a decent budget since I work for a corporation.
If I lost my job or decided to go on my own, $299 would make it easier to deal with than a seat with Avid.
Got it in one. I just watched an Indy Mogul episode and in the credits it was produced, presented and edited by the same person. She also interviewed people for a vox pop. End result looked good too. (http://www.indymogul.com/beyondtrailer/episode/BTT_20110415_1/scream-4-movie-review)
At the Supermeet presentation, the guy said "And it's only $299, which means you don't have to decide who gets a copy" (or words to that effect). THe last bit was drowned out by the crowd, but he meant that you no longer have to give everyone FCP/Motion/Color/STP/Cinema Tools if all they need is FCP.

you mean like those who feel religious oppressed need to source how exactly a veil is religious?
It's hard to source an opinion.
But when someone asserts that laws exist, it shouldn't be too much to expect them to source those laws.

I agree with you in a lot of ways.....being a business major, I understand the need for margin on a product....HOWEVER, Apple should first be interested in gaining MARKET SHARE. With this little $899 baby, Apple had a chance to really market a one-size-fits-all solution for many families. For instance, I work at Best Buy in computer sales and I see NO NEED for anything past Intel Integrated Graphics on the computers we sell to 75-80 percent of the people that come in a purchase a computer. The educational iMac would have been PERFECT for the masses, a computer that's more than capable for what most people want to do with it, with the capability for a little bit of gaming as well. Anyone who needs more can get the one with the graphics card.
I agree with the fact that margin has to be made, but there comes a time when you have to gain market share. Once you've done that and the volume of business you are doing is much greater than before (and your competitors are in the dust, much like I would like Dell and Windows to be), you can increase your margin and please the shareholders....
My two cents, Apple messed up on this one, hopefully we see that iMac configuration or a similar model on the market soon...
Excellent points made! Apple messed up bigtime!

rape is a good point ..i mean thats the reason some argue when they debate against this anti veil law , to protect the women from preying eyes , ok i agree to a extend ...some women should be forced to wear a Burka from a certain weight on instead of tight biking shorts and belly free tops ..but thats more a matter of taste ;)
i mean some US states have laws how much of the bum a bikini worn by a women at the beach has to cover up... and nobody is protesting against that or?
some or most south american countries made the opposite laws to prevent rape , rape is unpunished there if the victim gets married by her rapist after the rape
but thats how christians should deal with such matter if they follow the bible
" If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives" (Deut. 22:28-30)
the Qur'an is a bit more protective in that matter
"And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations)- Flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors" (Quran 24:4)
i mean nothing agains a women to cover her head with a headscarf , some western women wear headscarfes too , ok mostly to protect the hairsstyle when its windy , but nonetheless they wear one the reason does not matter

Apple is not doing this for the first time! They know exactly what they are doing by maintaining a healthy level of tension regarding stock, shipping, etc. It's all part of the game!

I have to assume that since Apple just released the 5.5G iPods, that if a 'true' video iPod is released, it will be as a 'super' iPod of sorts. This will be similar to when the iPod photo came out.
This is the only thing that makes sense to me, otherwise, why would apple put so much time between the two 5g releases, only to make them obsolete a month later???
This also makes sense in light of apple bringing down the prices so much with its last update, so that they can make room at the top.
so... who here feels sorry for the zune boys?

Xserve lags so far behind the Mac Pro in release, costs much more, has little to make it better and just as much to make it worse. I would love to have an Xserve, but I don't understand why anyone would buy one.
#1 feature: The xserve is small and takes little rack space
#2 redundnet power supplies
#3 disks and power supplies are front servicable (these are the thing that break all the time)
#4 Bundled with server version of OSX
#5 It comes with an option for no graphic card.
#6 Lights Out managment (see #5 above)
Of the above I bet #6 and #1 are the most populare features
Here is soething that competes with the xserve
http:http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t1000/
Notice they talk abut "power comsumption" and "compute density" something that only someone running many dozens or hundreds of these would care much about.
If yu realy want an xserve and can't afford one. I'd suggest buying a 1U rack mount PC case putting an ASUS mainboard inside of it and installing BSD UNIX. A Mac without a graphic card and with no mouse or keyboard is just a UNIX box.

It's truly shocking how many empty headed people offer a mac mini as an idea when someone obviously wants an expandable system. He already has a tower and is looking at another tower so spending more and getting what he doesn't want is a solution somehow.. Wow.
Anyway.. some actual advice intended to help you. I wouldn't buy a G5 tower myself as they are far too unreliable. I have posted about this before and they are quite unreliable. This (http://www.macintouch.com/reliability/pmg5.html) link shows extensive research based on actual Apple repair records on G5's. A quick sum up is that even the most reliable one (the dual 2.3GHz) saw 11% go in the shop for one reason or another. The worst model (the first dual 2GHz) saw a whopping 32% in the shop for repair.
Best and cheapest solution in my mind..
Get a G4 MDD dual 1.25 or dual 1.42. Even the dual 1.25 will be a world apart performance wise compared to your single 867MHz. Not quite as fast as a dual G5 but really not all that much slower and much more reliable. A fair price of ebay for these models would be maybe 250-300. I prefer the heavily upgraded Sawtooth I have but it's a much bigger investment than an ebay MDD. Even the low end dual 867 MDD I used to own handled all flash quite well. A 1.25+ won't have any issues with anything you want to do at all.
How is the Mac mini not expandable? The current mini, can handle up to 8GB of RAM, and can be configured up to 1 TB of HDD space. Then, you can add many, many peripherals. The dual core processor alone is worth the extra $. What can you expand on a G4 or G5 that you can't expand on a mini?
If I had to choose $250 for a G5, or $700 for a mini, $600 or less referbed, I'd choose the mini.

I had no idea how cricket was played until this past week while in India. It seems that cricket is quite popular there, and was one of the few sports available in English on the tele, so I watched it. After a little while I was able to figure out the basics - overs, wickets, bowlers, etc. - as wells as how the scoring works.
What I find amazing is how long the matches (tests?) last. There was a news story about a growing trend - "3 hour cricket". Sounds good to me!
Turns out a guy I work with used to play cricket (he's from Jamaica) so he was giving me some more information about the game. It's pretty cool.
