In terms of the hardware, Macs are using the same commodity components every other computer is built of, so there's no "special sauce" in that regard.

Actually there is. OS X runs on a limited amount of hardware and it's easy to test against that whereas impossible to test against the Frankenstein assortment of parts that make up OEM PCs. In addition Apple gives you a a better case, better keyboard and better display than the OEMs. That counts.

As per software, Apple doesn't develop that much. So most is 3rd party, and subject to the same developmental compromises that are made on any other platform (set goals on function/features and how to utilize development time that's within budget to generate them).

Let's see: Safari, Mail, Bento, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iTunes, iLife and many more. You might as well claim that Microsoft doesn't make much in the way of software.

Many of the Mac software houses gave up making Windows versions for the simple reason that it wasn't cost efficient. Windows sales accounted for 15% of business, but Windows accounted for 85% of the costly support calls.
Why? Windows is required to run on a tremendous variety of hardware and the truth is that it often doesn't run very well on them. As above, you cannot test your software on every type of PC hardware.

Depending on your needs, the OS may even be dictated by the software choices

Agreed. I use Scrivener 2 and Keynote for most of my work. Windows would be useless.

You're saying clusters are needed to write books?
I didn't say that at all. You implied that the important part of Reprographics was not the creation of it, but the printing. While the latter is an important part, the former is far more demanding.

I think that Apple, Inc. will having a special event for other new product launches. If they do have one of these special events then I can very well see iLive '07 and a briefing of Leopard. I do not expect to see any hardware updates cause the lines have been updated not too long ago. I wouldn't get all huffy and puffy about certain products were not announced or talked about. Apple, Inc. probably has a very good reasons to why they make their keynote soley about the iPhone.

After seeing something about an iChat application for Windows, I wonder if there isn't a huge event coming where the Cocoa application framework will be available on Windows suddenly and all Apple software will work on both platforms.

Princetonians, in my experience, are fratboys, prudes, and associated squares--by far the worst of the Ivies. Not a creative bone in the entire student body. They wouldn't know Macintosh if it bit them in their collective beige butt.

So tell me, how on earth is this good news? Unimaginative folk like these don't belong on our platform. Much better to celebrate the longstanding prevalence of Macs on progressive, independent-minded, and artistic campuses such as Brown and Columbia. But Princeton? Give me a break.
Give me a break. I'm sure your "experience" is vast, and you know every person at Princeton. You are the kind of person who should not be on the Mac platform.

What I can't wrap my head around is the sheer gullibility of not only the authors of this site, but so many of the frequent readers.

Do any of you possess short term memory? At all?

What has happened for the last 4 years in a row? With no lapse, no change, no variation whatsoever. iPhone is released in mid to late June. Once July.

What was it, before the iPad 2 announcement, that every one was certain of? iPad 2 will be late. No new iPad til September.

Apple laughed at that and said, actually were ready to go next week.

You'd have to be pretty deluded, and cracked out on the rumor mill, to think any other other iPhone 5 @ WWDC, release 2-3 weeks after.

What evidence has anyone seen to the contrary? Besides ****ing zero?

Every year, new iPhone around June.

    Why would it be otherwise?

Verizon Phone, iOS5 not being ready, Tsunami in Japan putting supplies into a shortage, take your pick.

I was thinking that it'd be really cool to release it early at MacWorld, but I highly doubt it as they'll probably need another two or three months to get a golden seed. They announced Tiger sometime around August and put it out in April; I don't see why and how they could release it in January but it still would be cool and beat the crap out of Redmond.

If anything, multiple desktops would act just like Fast User Switching. I wish Macosxrumors would get their site back online.

Apple's never shown any signs of being keen on Virtual Desktops so I'm not sure where that's coming from, especially as the "Hide/show" feature of NEXTSTEP that ended up in OS X is, arguably, slightly more useful anyway.

If they do have it, I hope it's like the Amiga's screens, with desktops opening and closing automatically rather than being permanently open. They need to be self-managing, and designed to make computing easier to understand. Traditional "multiple desktops" are a powerful feature, but I don't think they aid understandability.

This is interesting to listen to! The reason this conversation is so beat to death is because both machines are SO VERY NICE!

I bought the 11 initially and loved it. But, after a few long sessions using it (4 or 5 hours straight), I began to have serious 2nd thoughts. My eyes just grew tired too fast. I ordered a 13 just to see what I thought. Well, I returned the 11 for the 13 and I am as happy as a clam! If I had kept the 11 it would have been a bit better traveling, but the 13 is pretty compact and light as well.

But, the 11 is maybe the sexiest looking personal computer I have ever seen! But alas, I am 55 years old and I need a little bigger screen. One more thing that I really enjoy more about the 13 is the longer battery life.

Each person has to weigh which factors are the most important to them. It is great that both if the Airs are so great that people labor over the decision as to which is the best for them individually.

Another thing that swayed me. I had a Dell xps m1210 (12" screen) for a couple years (in my PC days) and it was my favorite Windows PC of all times. However, when I got another laptop I went to a Dell 17. I only enjoyed it for about 1 month - it was too darn big, hot and heavy. It was at that time I went to a white MacBook and fell in love with Macs. As of rt now in my business I have access to iMac 27, MBP 17, MBP 15, MBP 13' MBA 13 and iPad 2. Right now I am traveling so am writing this on iPad 2. The MBA 13 is with me on the trip and will be pulled out when I get serious about working!

Honestly, the MBA 13 is the machine that I use 90% of the time when I am working. The iPad 2 is what I use when I am just relaxing or responding to email.

I hardly use the iMac 27 because I hate sitting at a desk. Once in a while when I am working late in the home office I will sit in the recliner with the MBA 13 as primary and connected to the MBP 17 as a 2nd display via Air Display.

Each person has to work thru their own requirements . I think it is great apple has so many great machines to choose from and work with.

frankly i don't see them coming out with a new model this summer. they haven't even done their usual mid-cycle hd bump.

also everyone keeps saying that they come out with a new phone every summer. pardon, but 3gs was a new phone my s.

they didn't make a new model in time, so instead decided to dump the s "news" on us.

i imagine something similar will happen this summer. perhaps they will even update att's body to match verizon's. but somehow a whole new model just doesn't seem to fit. imho...

Ah....Damn....But Leopard will include iLife '07 right? I hope they also add iWork '07 as a freebie along with Leopard! I would love to start using iWork, but an imminent update is holding me back from my purchase.
IIRC, when the Tiger upgrade DVD came out, it didn't include iLife or iWork.

At Apple's prices, it's hard to understand how any business can justify switching to Xserve. Sorry, but I can buy several Dells with the same CPUs and RAM for what Apple is charging. This is unbelieveable. I canb buy SuperMicro or Tyan 1U barebones and assemble all the remaining CPUs/components myself and set it up in about 2 to 3 hours and probably still come out 1/5th the price of the Xserve. This just makes absolutely no sense at all.

Let me just check if I get this right: For $760 you can build a server with two dual-core 2.66 GHz Core2 Duo chips, where the chips alone cost >$800 each. You can add three 750GB drives for $140 each, and a 7 TB RAID server for another $2600. Cool. You take orders?

Most likely you might have the Delphi pump.. I never had the Panasonic when I had my G5 Quad 2.5 years ago, but then again from what I heard and also read on xlr8yourmac.com, very very few G5 Quads had problems with the LCS and leaks, compared to the dual 2.5 and 2.7 models.

Right you are. It is a Delphi. The plastic pin is a real pain to get out. So far so good everything is nice and dry. The hoses still appear to look good. There was only a very slight dust covering on them. Probably from all the months I use to take it outside and blast it with the air cans. Gave it a good thorough blast to get rid of whatever dust bunnies that was left behind the plastic radiator protector and nuke and crannies. It's knocked 5c off the temperatures. 50c idle, 54c during web browsing and hardly any whirring now. It was only mild whirring recently.

A FELONYhas been committed. Who cares about the company involved or anything else. We live in a country that has the rule of law, and it allows for someone (or a company) to file a complaint with their local police department, and if the police can gather enough evidence to prove probable cause. They then can issue warrants break down doors and arrest the criminal. Gizmodo purchased stolen merchandise, and the guy who found it (wink, wink) made no attempt to return it to it's rightful owner. Under California law that is a crime. Then he sold it to Gizmodo (Felony) and once Gizmodo received the stolen merchandise they are guilty of a felony as well. I don't care if it is Apple, an individual, or whatever, it sounds to me like the rule of law is working. Why are most people missing this?

Jobs may be skinny, but he is also getting older... there's nothing out of the ordinary here. Sure he may be a God to some of us (myself included :p), but he is a normal person like you and me. He sounded better at this presentation than he did at the Mac mini and iPod Hi-Fi introductions. He's actually been skinnier for a while now, so I am sure everything is fine. If anything, I think his performance has been improving throughout the year. I'm confident in his health. :)

As for the other speakers... I have to agree about Phil. He seems like a great guy, but his speaking skills are no where near as great as Steve's. Who was the other guy besides Bertron (sp?)? I really liked his presentations. He kept me interested, especially during Time Machine.

The torrented MPEG-4 or H264 saved movies of the Keynotes that I have seen were captured using
screenshot-apps such as Snapz Pro. They usually weigh-in at approx. 160 MB for 90 minutes.

    It usually takes a couple days for these to appear on Bit Torrent networks;
presumably the person doing the recording must wait for the stream traffic to
die down enough to get a clean, uninterrupted stream to work with.

At least that's my understanding of it...

And yet they still might. The culture there is very honor bound. It can great a lot of stress. Especially if you just lost the job that is supporting your family out in the country, have been publicly humiliated and probably blacklisted from similar jobs.

As for Foxconn having them arrested, I'm not surprised. They risk losing their contracts with more than just Apple if it is implied that they condone this behavior. So they have to come out against it even if they really aren't

Oh yeah!?!?! Very honor-bound I'm sure! For a country that is number 1 in the world for software piracy and other forms of theft of intellectual property they have a very strange way of showing it.

On the other hand, Apple knew when they decided to manufacture their products in China, what they were bargaining for! These people sometimes live in extreme poverty and need to find any means of supporting their family. For Apple it is just money but for these people it is their lives and their family's life. It just goes to show how companies like Apple make their money. To us North Americans they paint a very pretty picture of themselves but underneath the surface they are corporate savages who are willing to strike down any human being that gets in their way to make a buck.

More than a bigger screen, I want better FEATURES in the UI. I want better ways of managing a quicklist (on the go kind of sucks). I want to be able to tag/mark tracks while im listening to them so that they appear flagged in iTunes. Now there is rudimentary text input for search, I want to be able to edit track tag info on the go. I want wireless syncing which would be useful for topping up podcasts, newly added files etc. Obviously syncing your whole collection wirelessly woudl take eons, but for new files and podcasts to be automatically synced would be superb. My podcasts would download overnight, and I take my iPod to work in the morning without even worrying about syncing and ejecting as all my latest podcasts are automatically on it. In the same way, I want an iPod to have presence detection so that when its in range of the Mac it shows in iTunes. I want Last.FM integrated! lol.
