+1 Hahaha. God I Hope Im eligible for an upgrade on one of my lines (My personal line isn't because i got the 3GS on the day it came out) Might have to steal an upgrade from another family member. : P

You may be eligible for the new iPhone. My brother got the 3GS almost 2 weeks after the launch and he is eligible to upgrade. And if you got the 3GS on launch day, you should obviously be eligible as well.

one of the big things that stopped me from moving over to mac in the past was office, and the ability to play games when i wanted

having only recently made the switch -no regrets

i purchased office for mac, then i purchased iwork and omg i prefer pages for an everyday word processor - office has become too complicated and user unfriendly - i only use itonce in a while for pro docs creation

I spoke to two techs at PC World computer superstore (biggest computer retailer in UK) two weeks ago about monitor compatibility with my G4 Mac Mini. Turned out both these guys owned Intel Macs, folks pay $$$$ to have their PCs fixed by these guys:p . Anyway I mentioned I was waiting till Leopard to upgrade my Mac. One of the guys mentioned they'd already got the date for when Intel Mac Mini's with Leopard will be in store. Wait for it... April 2007:( . It seems unlikely that Leopard will pounce onto our screens in January.
Those guy's don't actually know anything, Apple hasn't announced anything other than "Spring 2007". However April sounds right to me. People thinking its coming in January are in for a shock, given how buggy the Leopard builds are rigt now its pretty unlikely that Leopard will be out any sooner than April.

Personally I'd like Apple to wait until Leopard is ready to release it, rather than release a bug ridden piece of crap like 10.4(.0) arguably was.

I'd rather Leopard was released later with fewer bugs and more stability, than sooner to compete with Vista (that isn't going to be adopted at the same speed anyway).

Thank you! Mac OS Tiger has been a really crappy experience for me. If I didn't have to lose some "tiger only" stuff I would switch back to Panther in a heartbeat.

I said it yesterday, and I'll say it again today: it's time to hold Apple's feet to the fire. I will add to that today, though: it is time to hold Apple AND Nike's feet to the fire.

It doesn't matter if this really isn't a security threat. Once it hits the 24 hour cable news networks and is recycled every 10 minutes as a story, Apple's reputation has been tarnished. To stop that Apple should come out with a FREE patch as soon as possible so that Apple's reaction will be added to the news story. It's not about security; it's about publicity.

...can Big Brothr track where you are but how unfit you are as well!

Or, if you get lost you can get one of the people 60 feet or so away from you tracking you to tell you where you are.

And we have all seen those CSI-type shows where they triangulate your location by the signal of your mobile phone. Thank god more people have Nike+ kits than cell phones or we would all be in danger...

    Oh wait...

I placed my order @ 5pm ET when they started taking orders and their first batch of this model arrived Tuesday and to me today. So 13 days from launch. Not bad and I saved $87 sales tax including the digital AV HDMI adapter which they expect to get some of tomorrow. :)

I think it's an extremely powerful feature, assuming external peripherals will work just fine in conjunction with the switch out pads.

Having hot-swappable modules with a USB keyboard/mouse gives laptops an entirely new appeal. I think this opens a whole new avenue of interest in the 17" laptop due to the large interface potential in a portable unit.

    Only question. Why?

Some say Apple need to buy Netflix. Have those of you even considered what Netflix charges for monthly streaming?

    $8

Apple will never let customers eat that much for so little. The day Apple buys Netflix, DVDs would stop, and streaming would go up to $30 a month.

    Promised.

It can certainly be a secular democracy, where the Muslims, Christians (yes there are Christian Palestinians as well) and Jews live together. it doesn't necessarily have to be a Muslim state.

That would be awesome, but if muslims are the majority, i have a bad feeling about what they will turn the country into. It would likely become a muslim state, and israel would not be able to remain secular.

I have long believed that a secular, unitary state is the only right solution for Palestine. It can happen.

Yeah, because muslims have a great track record when it comes to running their own countries. Of course there are a few exceptions, but they usually have a difficult time separating religion from politics. Islam isn't just a religion, its a political ideology for many of them. If the palestinians were mostly christian, this situation wouldn't be going on right now. The whole problem is the fact that they are muslim.

Who is your provider please? That's a lot cheaper than I've been quoted :D

Edit: To keep my post on topic, OP you may want to have a look at this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1045086) (although it seems a bit OTT spec-wise), this (http://www.simplynas.com/data-robotics-drobopro-48tb-business-bundle---3-x-drobo-pros-and-24-x-2tb-hitachi-seagate-sata-ii-drives.aspx) (how cheap NAS storage can be) and this (http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/) (just because ;))

Attach a server to serve the storage and terminate VPN connections and you should have a working solution for a reasonable cost.

Why do you live in America then? Seriously? Why?

Move to Japan if you dont want looting.

Move to France if you want "#1 Healthcare"

Move to the jungle if you don't want to hear advertisements.

Take your time machine to Nazi Germany if it's really THAT tough living with the other 2 of 3 major political parties. I'm sure you would love the fantastic single-party system.

Now onto the OP- I, like most of the posters here I suspect, have never been to Japan, so am hardly qualified to offer an answer.

I also suspect that there is some looting going on, but there are more important things to be reported on than a guy taking a tv from a store: Libya, an earthquake, a heating nuclear reactor, rebecca blacks dub step remix, etc.

You bring up an interesting point. There's no looting in Japan, yet I don't believe most Americans would be happy with all that comes with a culture that has no looting. It is also a culture with extreme conformity. Try explaining to a Japanese person that being gay is accepted as perfectly normal in most parts of the U.S.

Let me give another example. If you were caught with any alcohol on your breathe while driving, you would 1) automatically go to jail 2) will have to pay around 5-6k in fines and 3) be fired from your job and 4) have an incredibly difficult time ever finding a job again. There's no due process; besides no one would accuse you unless you did something. And if there's a conflict between a Japanese person and a foreigner, it has to be the foreigner's fault. My friend got into a car accident which wasn't her fault. The Japanese party was allowed to go after talking with the police for about 20 minutes. My friend was question on site for 2-3 hours and taken to the station for another 10 hours. All for a simple traffic accident with no injuries.

I like him, contrary to everybody else bashing him in the other post.

Nice to see his lack of grammar, but it's just a blog post.

Also, I'm wondering how much they pay him, considering his statements of being paid well... ..i guess it is Apple...

The reason they pay him well is that they want to keep him happy doing it as Apple plans on using this ad theme for quite a while. They *don't* want to be forced to switch faces any sooner than they choose to. Also, everyone's saying that they prefer the PC guy. It's absolutely normal as he is the comic element in the ads. The PC guy is given all the funny lines. But those same lines make him look... well... less than god-like. You're not supposed to *like* the Mac guy. He's the captain of your highschool's football team. He's the class president and the prom king. He's all that and more, so you hate him, wish you were him and... buy a Mac. The efficiency of the ads is not measured by how much you like the Mac guy or whether you prefer him to the PC guy but by how many Macs the ads sell. And I think the ads are pretty good at selling Macs. So more power to the Face of the Mac!!! (He's good for my stock...)

The vast majority of Vista is "service pack" material. There are only 4 or 5 things that needed a whole new OS (new in the sense that its not XP anymore).

I've read a little on the subject of Japanese society (The Chrysanthemum and the Sword is good) and visited a few times. I don't have a complete answer, but a couple of points people haven't made yet are:

    - Japan is racially and culturally quite pure - with low immigration and a high barrier for immigrants to integrate (the language). Japanese language and culture is not widely spread outside of Japan. This leads to them having a very inward focus, and a high amount of loyalty to their own society. As a Westerner/English speaker, you could disgrace yourself in your own society, yet still find a happy home somewhere culturally similar. For a Japanese person there is no other home - if they disgrace themselves to their fellow Japanese, they risk being ostracised from everything they hold dear. (This is the reasoning given in TCANS for the low surrender rate of Japanese troops in war - a Western army will surrender with 30% dead, for the Japanese 90%+ would have to die, since to surrender would be to disgrace oneself and become ostracised. This is the same reasoning for the Japanese army's poor treatment of prisoners of war in WWII - as the social standing of one who surrenders is very low).

    - Having transgressed, Japanese society is happy to throw the book at a suspected criminal - and extends few of the rights arrestees enjoy in the West. Prisoners can be held for 23 days before being charged, the legal system assumes guilt and police have traditionally interrogated in private. When a case reaches trial, there's a >98% conviction rate, and trials have until very recently (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8181225.stm) all be Judge-only trials (no jury). There's evidence that lenient Judges face career setbacks.

So yes, the Japanese people may be educated, moral, disciplined - but there are also very strong societal pressures to conform, and if a person did loot, they'd expect to be treated extremely severely.

I think you're spot on. I lived in Japan for a while, in a very rural part, and it was like that. For crime, the burden is on the accused to prove innocence, not the other way around like in Western cultures. And there is no search and seizure. If they believe you might have done something, they can search you all they want. If someone was caught with drugs, his phone records would be searched and every single person on that phone list would be searched. In Japan, you really can't get away with a crime. And like you said, your circle of friends and family is all you have in Japan. There's no running away from who you are. If, in a time of crisis, you become a thief, everyone would lose all respect for you. One of my favorite Japanese mma fighters was disowned by his father for failing his high school exit exam. Think about how shameful being a thief would be. And in Japanese culture, fighting on in times of hardship is a very important quality. They sort of see it as a time to show your best. At least that's what I get from watching Japanese mma fighters.

I do not understand why any of you are even THINKING it will be anything close to DVD quality....

first, what is the resolution of current iTunes video offerings? Why would they even consider upping the res, they are testing and running fine on the current (read pissy!) rez.

second, how much of the iTunes music is offered at CD resolution? How many have an option for higher rez?

I do not think Apple wants to offer high rez (d/l costs and times), and I am sure the movie (and music) companies don't want it. Do not even think the rez will be any higher (ever) that current iTunes vid- it just will not happen.

iMovie, with video only sutible for iPods, will only be a novety, at best. I bet it will be worse- movie studios are TOO greedy, and will price this out of the market and that, in and of itself, will cause it to fail.

Cingular is not the only GSM carrier in the USA.

T-Mobile is pretty big too. They have just purchased a ton of bandwidth for new high-speed services.

Remember the T-Mobile CEO saying "we have a similar vision as Apple" ?

That's why Cingular went with Microsoft, they know they didn't win over Apple. So, this is most likely going to be a T-Mobile partnership (whose corporate parent has a HUGE presence in Europe).

TMobile is actually pretty small when compared with the top 3:

    Cingular
    Verizon
    Sprint/Nextel

The top 3 comprise 78% of cell phones in the country.

I doubt the comments from the TMobile CEO had much to do with the decision.

Cingular is currently is the only major carrier that does not have an MVNO based on it's lines. (As far as I know)

Verizon has Alltel & Virgin Mobile
Sprint has Virgin Mobile, some TraCphone & other prepaid offerings

AT&T wireless used to have SunCom as an MVNO, but when they merged with Cingular they went independent - putting up their own towers and leasing some towers from Cingular.

It's my opinion that Apple will be a Cingular based MVNO and that the phone will work on TMobile and SunCom - but just won't be supported - just like Cingular phones are now. IE - I can buy a TMobile Sidekick on eBay and use it on Cingular, I just don't have the same plan or all features available to me.

The only alliance that I see Apple may have with T-Mobile is that Danger - which makes the semi-exclusive T-Mobile SideKick has Steve Wozniak as an investor.

Now, you can look at that coincidence from two angles:

    1) It's just something Woz saw promise in
    2) He's been there (at Danger) as a technology partner/development partner for Danger all along to be able to assist Apple first hand with their own Phone efforts. A plant, if you will.

Personally, I see the iPhone as being something very very similar to a Sidekick ... but better.
