i love macs i love the simplicity but theres nothing out there
that will topple microsoft office period.

As of now, you are correct.
However, don't forget Lotus 1-2-3, dbase IV and others had there day in the sun as well.
At this point, Apple does not need to "overthrow" Office, just provide as alternative.

Except of course for those who want to listen to music. Touch screen and features are rather useless to me in the car. And the iPod Touch is much too big, compared to my iPod nano.

Has anyone ever explained the meaning of "gross margin" to you?

    Sorry.
However, their profit margin (not gross margin) is around 25%. Profit for 2010 was 14 billion, revenue was 65 billion. Operating income was 18.4 billion.

I was at work. People were talking about the first plane crash so I ran to the cafeteria to see the second plane hit on TV. I must have sat there and watch it for an hour or so. Eventually, they sent everyone home because no one was getting any work done.

One lucky coworker of mine was on a plane that was forced to land in Hawaii. He got to spend 3-4 days in Hawaii on the company dime.

Another unlucky coworker was on a plance that was forced to land in Winnepeg, Canada. They kept everyone on the plane for 8 hours. They only unloading the plane when the toilets started to back up. Everyone was herded in a room where they had to stay for ~24 hours.

Just get the i5. i7 overheats way too much and is not worth the extra cash. That game will get handled by the HD3000 just fine, requirements-wise. If you have extra cash, get a 7200rpm hard drive.

Thank you Fivepint, I needed a good laugh.

Taxes are the price you pay for the privelege of earning money. If the cost of government is X, then the revenue collected should equal X. If one party *cough* GOP *cough* cuts revenue so much that we end up with a debt that equals Y, then you must cut spending and increase revenue so that you can pay X plus some of Y to eventually eliminate the debt.

If the people who benefited the most from the cuts now have all the wealth and make all the income, they are going to have to pay a higher share of the increases in X. That's just how it is.

You can't expect the poor to pay what they don't have, and you can't kill the middle class.

On the topic of photo storage and editing, I ran across this blog post in an app on my iPad called Photoverse. It details how to use star ratings to thin out a shoot without dumping any photos.

Chase Jarvis Photo Editing 101 (http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2011/03/photo-editing-101/)

    Dale

Thanks for sharing this app Dale! I have a lot of research to do! :)

ok 100Teraflops I use a Mac Pro daily for Music and Photography, The Mac Pro is a good beastie but alone it cant do the job, it must be paired up to a good Monitor, IPS panel if possible, I did use apple's but found the Dell's re-produced colour better. When you purchase your DSLR will you shoot RAW or Jpeg, think about it, RAW may be bigger files, but you can keep producing a good quality image from just 1 RAW file, On the subject of a scratch disk try and dedicate a complete disk as scratch.
my MP is set up as follows,
    bay 1 :500gb for OS & apps
bay 2 :320gb as Scratch Disk
    bays 3 & 4 : both have 1tb hdd's in a raid 1 configuration for music and stuff
All my RAW files & Aperture library are on a WD my book studio 4TB edition in a raid 1 via fw800 giving me 2TB to use, The system is simple and it works well. the big hdd's are all green WD drives. Hdd's are cheap now, but get the biggest you can afford (don't buy at the apple store), I find using Raid 1 I spend less time now backing up. The hardest part of photography is deleting images, you may take 100 shots and find only 2 of them are keepers, but getting rid of blurry, out of focus files will free up a lot of space,
you have had some excellent advice on here so far, and it will be nice to hear how you finally set up your workflow, keep us posted :)

Thanks for recommending the specs of a quality monitor. Your Mac Pro HDD configuration is simple and easy to understand. Are you using striping from OS X or did you set you RAID 1 with only two drives? I agree that it is very hard deleting photos, as I do not delete photos after I take them. I wait a few days or longer, and then decide if they are keepers. However, I take photos of my family etc and occasionally automobiles and landscape. Also, you are right that I have received excellent advice from the forum members. You folks rule! :)

I will keep you all posted. I am thinking that I should buy a Mac Pro soon! From what I have read on this forum, a new Mac Pro is not expected until 4Q 2011 or 2012. I do not want to wait that long for a stupid processor chipset. :D A few months is optimal, but 6-8 is not feasible. Thanks again for sharing knowledge and swapping ideas!

No, alloc and release do not always occur in the same function. For example, one object creates another object (and stores a pointer to it) at init time...then at dealloc time, releases it. Very common.

sorry, that was the first thing that crossed my mind . I do remember the Kool Aid Guy though. Anyway, I do have a mini. But I'm waiting for some things to get moved around in my room since it current home is on my dresser along with its non-connected peripherals, including a new 22-inch dell monitor that was hooked up for a day :(

Not sure why people think this is bad. Fair use if you ask me.

OTOH it's possibly open to abuse but i think it's worth the risk. I'm not overly keen on DRM stopping people doing what they like with stuff they've paid for. I wouldn't touch a DRM CD for example. All my downloads are from places that don't do DRM (and have at least 320kbps mp3 or better).

I wouldn't be able to say how much capacity you need, however, large hard drives are pretty cheap so I'd probably get a bit more than you think you need. Remember there's no need for a fast HDD, maybe something like a WD caviar green?

Thanks, I was thinking speed instead of storage.

Regardless of the mic's quality, being that it is on-camera would mean that only the sounds very close to the camera would be picked up well.

On-camera mics are notorious for overall poor sound recording. If you want good quality audio recording, you'd need to mic the sound source(s) properly and with the right type of mic(s).

    Why?

They've held this strategy for over two decades and the only time they were in trouble, financially, was when they abandoned it.

Methinks you know tech a whole lot better than you do how to run a business.

Apple has been the extreme minority in selling personal computers since 1986. Their pc marketshare has been below 10% for how long? 20+ years...and still is even though they are selling like hotcakes.

I like the Macs...I also like the Wintels. And I also, as a consumer, am not going to plunk down $1200+ for a Mac when a $600-$700 PC will allow me to do 100% of the same stuff just using different name-brand-products. :) And other consumers who are out there looking to buy a new computer to surf the web, play music, surf Youtube, upload pix, go to Facebook, use online chat, read email, (and a billion other online activities) are going to ask themselves "why am I spending $1200 for a Mac using Firefox when I can buy a $600 PC using the same Firefox?"

I don't want to go too off topic but suffice to say these days, so much pc time is spent online that you could be using any computer manufacturer/OS in the world that supports Firefox or Safari or IE and you'd have the same experience. Why spend double?

The reason MacBU has had to abandon VBA is that the Mac compiler won't work on Intel Macs. And Microsoft has already announced that VBA is being deprecated on Windows (it will go on working for a few years, then will end). So there's no point devoting enormous efforts to making a new compiler only for it all to go away shortly afterwards. There is some reason to believe that eventually VB.NET will work on the Mac as it does on Windows, as a cross-platform solution. Until then, VBA macros need to be translated to AppleScript. There can be no better signal that MacBU is committeed to the Mac than to see the huge investment they have made in AppleScript. Office's AppleScript is already working as of Office and it mirrors the VBA model identically: macros can be translated to AppleScript _now_, and will then "just work" in the next version of Office too.

    Interesting information.

So Office 2004 AppleScript can translate VB on the fly (and 2007 VB can translate AppleScript), or that's the goal and we aren't there yet?

If they can keep the scripting compatible, then I can definitely see a plus in dropping VB for Mac Office.

    http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)

Hrmpf reports (http://hrmpf.com/wordpress/90/apple-describes-new-interface-for-ipod) on a particularly revealing patent application from Apple that was published on October 26, 2006.

The name of the patent application is "Electronic Device Having Display and Surrounding Touch Sensitive Bezel for User Interface and Control". The patent describes and depicts a full-screen touch sensitive iPod very similar to the various Video iPod Mockups (http://guides.macrumors.com/Gallery_of_Video_iPod_Mockups) that have been floating around the web. The application was filed in June of 2006.

The focus of the patent is the incorporation of a touch-sensitive bezel (edge of screen) that can adapt to the screen contents to provide an input method for the user. Hrmpf suggests that the use of this non-screen area would eliminate many of the "smudge" and "scratch" concerns for a full-screen touch iPod.

It's not up to date, it has the latest firmware you can get without paying. Maybe Apple decided to stop selling 2.x and 3.x and that's why it thinks it's up to date. But you can still obtain the firmware from other places, a quick google should do it.

Thank You. In the process of trying to do that now!

Thanks for the responses G and Paul. :)

Yes, to answer your question, yes I do have the iTunes volume on max, so it's not one of those types of issues.. :)

What I find particularly interesting is this information on apple.com/emac
"Speakers of the house - The speakers on the eMac are twice the size and twice the volume of the speakers in the 15-inch CRT-based iMac. And weve designed speaker grills that perfectly coordinate with the eMac and protect the speakers from prying fingers, pens and paper clips."

If anyone can offer any suggestions or further comments I will greatly appreciate them. Thanks! :)
